Three Hacks to Keep Mosquitoes Away On The 4th of July

June 24, 2021 by Brian Kelly

Dead cartoon mosquitoes on a white background.
The 4th of July is a holiday when family, friends, and loved ones spend time together in the warm summer sun. While you are having a lively conversation, grilling up some delicious food, and hanging out poolside, the last thing you should be worried about is mosquitoes. These pesky insects can turn your outdoor gathering into a disaster.

In addition to itchy bites, mosquitoes can be a threat to you and your loved ones’ health if they are carrying a mosquito-borne disease, including West Nile virus, dengue fever, or even malaria. Eastern Suffolk County’s pest control experts on mosquito control since 1997, East End Tick and Mosquito Control® want to provide you with some tips on how to keep mosquitoes away from your 4th of July celebration.

  1. Plant Citronella Grass In Your Yard
If you have ever purchased natural mosquito repellant, you may have noticed that one of the main ingredients is citronella. You can commonly find citronella candles that are said to repel mosquitoes naturally, and this is because the scent deters them. Though you can use citronella-scented products, GardenDesign.com advises that the living citronella grass plant is the most effective form of the plant that will keep mosquitoes away.
  2. Remove Still Water
Depending on the design of your backyard or patio, you may have areas of still water. Examples of still water sites include inflatable pools, birdbaths, or flowerpots. Any object that holds stagnant, non-chlorinated water can become an attractive spot for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Reducing the amount of still water in your outdoor living area will significantly decrease the chance of having a nasty mosquito infestation on your hands.
  3. Keep Your Yard Clean
Having a clean yard is not only great for your party guests, but it is also an effective way to keep mosquitoes away. Do not leave dirty plates or used cups lying around. Make sure to dispose of any garbage quickly and effectively in sealed bags. Though mosquitoes do not consume waste, Outforia.com states that they are attracted to the smell of garbage.
