Late winter in Long Island can be unpredictable. Some days feel like we’re living in a deep freeze, and others seem like we skipped right over spring and fell headlong into summer.
Deciding when to start spraying for mosquitoes can be confusing, to say the least. Luckily, mosquitoes are predictable creatures that always emerge from their overwinter dormancy under the same conditions every year.
When Should I Start Spraying For Mosquitoes?
The best time to start mosquito spraying is shortly before their season begins. Mosquito activity peaks when temperatures are between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit, but they become active at temperatures as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you begin a spraying protocol when temperatures approach 50 degrees, adult and freshly hatched larval mosquitoes (that were able to overwinter in a hibernation-like state) will be eliminated before they can emerge, multiply, and thrive. It is much easier to attack these emerging mosquitoes than to play catchup later on with fully functioning adult mosquitoes.
Does Spraying For Mosquitoes Actually Work?
While nothing eliminates mosquitoes permanently, professional spraying is quite effective. Adulticide spray kills flying mosquitoes immediately, and larvicide spray acts over time – eliminating larvae that hatch from eggs. Used together, these products dramatically reduce the number of mosquitoes in the treated area.
What Is The Best Time To Spray For Mosquitoes?
The optimal time of day to spray for adult mosquitoes is at dawn and dusk when they are most active. When you use the services of a mosquito control company that observes typical business hours, we factor in the time differential between peak mosquito activity and the time we spray – adjusting our process accordingly to eliminate the maximum number of mosquitoes.
When scheduling a spray treatment, please keep in mind the time of day when people or pets are likely to be outdoors. You will need to allow the insecticide to dry before allowing children or pets in or near the treated area.
How Often Should You Spray For Mosquitoes?
Most mosquito control applications work for roughly 30 days – with effectiveness waning near the end of that period. Spraying every four weeks will ensure that your property remains as mosquito-free as possible.
