Three Home Remedies for Treating Mosquito Bites

July 29, 2021 by Brian Kelly

A child scratching mosquito bites on their legs. While you are outside enjoying the warm summer sun with family and friends, you can expect to encounter a few mosquitoes now and then. Mosquitoes are not only irritating, but their bite can be itchy and uncomfortable. As Long Island’s foremost mosquito control experts, East End Tick and Mosquito Control® have in-depth knowledge about all things related to mosquitoes, including how to treat their bites. Here are three ways to treat mosquito bites on your own. Keep in mind however, these remedies are only for non-life-threatening mosquito bites that do not require medical attention. A person who is allergic should seek immediate medical care.

  1. Use an Ice Compress
Using an ice bag or cold compress has been a home remedy for several ailments, and this is no different for mosquito bites. A bite from a mosquito causes inflammation to the skin, but fortunately, the cold temperature of ice significantly reduces this inflammation. You can easily create an ice bag compress by wrapping crushed ice in a washcloth. Place this compress on the bite to ease your symptoms.
  2. Apply Aloe Vera
Nature brings us many natural yet effective remedies, and the aloe vera plant is well known for its many soothing properties. In addition to the inflammation and swelling, a mosquito bite is also itchy and red. Applying natural aloe vera gel directly to the bite will naturally calm the itchiness and reduce the redness. We recommend using it about four times a day and letting it dry between each application.
  3. Clean It with Alcohol
Using alcohol has been a remedy for bites of all kinds, and it is very effective on mosquito bites. You can utilize commons forms of alcohol that you have on hand, such as rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. However, we recommend using witch hazel because it is a natural astringent. Moisten a cotton ball or pad with the witch hazel and rub it on your bite. The antiseptic properties of the witch hazel will prevent the mosquito bite from becoming infected and soothe the itch.
