Mosquito season can sneak up on you. Seems like one day you are bundled up against the cold and the next you’re fanning yourself in the heat swatting away mosquitoes. With so many things competing for our attention every day, it is easy to forget about mosquito mitigation until the problem becomes undeniable.
Allowing these aggravating pests to become established in your yard isn’t just a nuisance. Mosquitoes are vectors for serious diseases that can result in debilitating illness. Even if you didn’t get an early start on mosquito control, you can still significantly reduce your risk of mosquito bites and increase your peace of mind.
When is Mosquito Season?
Long Island’s mosquito season runs from early spring until late fall. Mosquitoes can be active any time temperatures exceed 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and their activity peaks at temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Mosquitoes don’t just have temperature preferences; they also prefer certain times of day. Most species – including those found on Long Island – are most active at dusk and dawn, when low-angled sunlight makes it easier for them to find prey. That said, you can be bitten any time mosquitoes are present, especially if you live near water or in proximity to wooded areas. Because mosquitoes breed and lay eggs in moist areas, anywhere there is standing water, there is a higher risk of encountering mosquitoes.
Is It Too Late for Residential Mosquito Control?
It is best to begin treating your home and yard for mosquitoes in the early spring as they emerge from their winter hibernation. Mosquitoes begin breeding a mere day after reaching adulthood, and each female mosquito can lay up to 500 eggs during her lifecycle.
Spraying early slows this exponential reproduction and dramatically decreases the number of mosquitoes as the season progresses. While it is optimal to begin controlling mosquitoes on your property before the mercury hits the 50-degree mark, it is never too late to take action.
When Should You Stop Spraying for Mosquitoes?
In the past, many people stopped spraying for mosquitoes around Labor Day. Today, a changing climate has allowed mosquitoes to flourish well into the autumn months. This means you may need to continue spraying in October or November… and to be vigilant during the winter months when temperatures rise above the 50-degree threshold.
