Different Types of Mosquitoes in the United States

August 26, 2021 by Brian Kelly

types of mosquitosDuring the summer, you are likely to encounter mosquitoes while spending time outdoors. Mosquitoes are a nuisance and will invade your space and can transmit dangerous diseases. There are many different species of mosquitoes to be aware of when you travel. The team at East End Tick and Mosquito Control® has extensive knowledge of mosquitoes and is here to warn you about three different mosquitoes found across the United States.

  1. The Asian Tiger Mosquito
The Asian Tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is easily identifiable by its black body and white stripes, one of which runs down its back. They made it to the United States by hiding in international shipments, and now they can be found in the central and eastern regions of the United States. Asian Tiger mosquitoes are aggressive and bite humans, domestic animals, and even wild animals. The primary danger from Asian Tiger mosquitoes is that they can carry several lethal diseases, including yellow fever, encephalitis, and all too well-known West Nile virus.
  2. The House Mosquito
The house mosquito, or Culex pipiens, is another mosquito species that targets humans to feed on and potentially transmit diseases. Among the sicknesses that they can carry and transmit are the West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis. You can recognize them by their oval-shaped body, grayish-white, silver, green, or blue. They are attracted to humid and moist areas, such as ponds, lakes, and other places where there is stagnant water. A house mosquito bite typically causes a mild reaction, but symptoms like nausea and difficulty breathing can occur on occasion.
  3. The Malaria Mosquito
As their name implies, the Malaria mosquito, or Anopheles quadrimaculatus, is the primary mosquito that transmits malaria in North America. They prefer to bite humans and large mammals, and they typically feed at night. The Malaria mosquito lays eggs and takes shelter in areas with water and vegetation. They are dark brown to black and are identifiable by the four spots on their wings.
